Resolving the Case of a Slippery Shower Pan

At Mincey, we take pride in creating high-quality shower pans that not only look great but are also reliable and safe. Each Mincey shower pan is crafted with a textured surface and regularly tested for slip resistance to ensure optimal performance. While slipperiness can occasionally become a concern, we’re ready to help you tackle it head-on and restore your shower’s safety and comfort.

While it's often assumed that the pan is the issue, the truth is that slipperiness is rarely due to the shower pan itself. Instead, it often comes down to cleaning practices, the cleaning products being used, or a combination of the two. Below, we’ll help you identify if you have a problem and provide a simple solution that ensures your pan maintains its original safety and comfort.

Step 1: Assess the Slickness of the Shower Pan

It’s important to note that you can’t rely on sight or touch alone to determine whether the surface is slippery.

Here’s how to test it properly:

  • Remove your shoes and socks.
  • Step into the shower barefoot and direct water onto the pan as you would during normal use.
  • Notice whether the surface feels slippery underfoot.

If you confirm that the pan is indeed slick, it’s time to tackle the culprit, which can be soap residue or body oils that are not being cleaned from the pan - and in some cases, it can even be residue from the cleaning agent being used.

Step 2: Perform a Deep Clean

Residue buildup is the most common reason for a slippery shower pan. To restore its slip resistance, you may need to perform an occasional deep clean using the following steps:

1. Use an Industrial Strength Degreaser and a Scouring Agent
Spray an industrial strength degreaser to the pan’s surface (ex: Purple Power™). Then, lightly dust with a scouring agent (ex: Bar Keepers Friend™).

2. Follow with a Nylon Brush
After applying the products from step one, scrub the surface of the pan with a nylon brush. This will easily get into the texture to quickly and easily remove any residue.

3. Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the surface with plenty of water to ensure all cleaning agents and residue are completely removed.

4. Test Again
After cleaning, step back into the shower barefoot and run water over the pan. You should immediately notice a significant difference in slip resistance.

For a dramatic comparison, try cleaning only one side of the pan first. This test will clearly show just how effective the degreaser is in restoring the surface’s grip.

Step 3: Implement Routine Maintenance

To keep your shower pan in its best condition and prevent slipperiness from occurring, adopt a cleaning routine designed for the pan’s specific material. Mincey pans feature a non-porous gel coat surface, which naturally resists mold, mildew, and bacteria. This surface quality makes maintenance easy and effective when approached correctly.

Here are some tips for routine cleaning:

  • Use a good cleaning agent that will eliminate oily buildup.
  • Avoid using harsh or oily cleaning products that might leave behind residues.
  • Regularly rinse the pan with water after cleaning to ensure no film is left on the surface.
  • Consider deep cleaning the pans on a regular basis. Depending on how effective your daily cleaning routine is, a deep clean may only be needed annually. However, if you're in a coastal area where suntan oils are common, you may consider doing this more often. Only you can determine how often your pans need a thorough cleaning - dependent upon the effectiveness of both your housekeeping staff and cleaning agents.

Why Mincey Shower Pans Are Uniquely Durable and Safe

The thoughtful design and material composition of Mincey shower pans mean they’re built to last and require minimal upkeep. Made from solid cast marble for ultimate durability and safety, the gel coat surface repels mold, mildew, and bacteria. This makes Mincey pans a practical and reliable choice for long-term use in any property.

If You Need To Deep Clean Too Often

We suggest working with your cleaning supply company to optimize your results. Demonstrate the process above by cleaning one side of a pan to create a clear comparison. Hopefully, this makes it easier for them to recommend a cleaner that delivers the same results. By doing so, you'll streamline your routine, and ideally, reduce the need for frequent deep cleaning of your pans.
